70's SINGLE FINS

Just finished.

A couple of 70's single fins.

The owners of these boards

are not into hiding all the dings etc.

It all adds to the character of the board.

GORDON WOODS

A realy nice example of a pinched rail

"Sam" inspired shape.

This board needs re fining

RON GUN

Ron surfboards produced alot of boards

over a short period of time.

This is the first gun shape I have seen built by Ron.

It is.

9' 3 1/4" x 20"x 3 3/4"

nose 14 3/8"

tail 11"

pod 3 3/4"

Dings and stressies sanded

and ready for some glass.

A cedar nose block was added to the nose.

Nose delam injected with resin

and clamped.

Deck glossed.

Flat rocker.

The chopped strand matt fin needed some work.

It had a number of big chunks of glass missing

from the leading and trailing edges.

These were filled with csm and sanded fair.

Two layers of 10oz cloth were added per side.

Finished.

BARRY BENNETT PIG

Early foam Bennett.

The current owner is the second owner.

9'1"x 21 3/8"x 3 1/4"

nose 16 3/16"

tail 18 3/16"

This board has two 5/8" balsa stringers

tapering out from the nose to the tail.
The board had no open dings.

There were a few deep gouges on the bottom nose which

needed some attention. As did the knee dents on the deck.

The fin needed re glassing.

The leading & trailing edges were showing exposed timber.

And how much the fin protrudes out past the pod.

This is a rare example of a Pig board.

circa 1959/60.

The wide point is 3'6" from the pod.

DALE "PIN TAIL"

Another DALE

Not in for a full restoration.
But in for some major work
and a polish.


Major delam.


Twenty two 2 litre milk bottles full of water.
Equates to 44kg.
Low tech but effective.

Ready for grinding and capping laminates.


Polycarbonate Safeset fin.

Pinlines over join.

All dings repaired and polished.

DALE

Dale surfboards was another manufactuter

based in Brookvale on Sydneys Northern beaches

in the 60's & 70's.

7'6" SOD

Noosa.

Steve O'Donnell

worked at Dale during this period.

Pre restoration.

Nose and tail damage.

With a few dings on the rails.

At some stage a plastic fin was crudely fitted
into the original Safeset finbox.
Making it impossible to use the finbox.



There were a couple of options.
Remove the old box and fit a new/second hand Safeset box.
Or fill the old box and set a new fin on top.
After removing a Safeset box from a donor board.
Which was a major job.
And caused some damage.
Filling the box and setting a new fin was by far the better option.
So the old box was cleaned up.
A 3mm rebate was cut into the box to make a clean edge.
Then filled with pigmented resin and milled fibre.
This was then capped with a two layers of 4oz cloth on the bias.





Foil.
Almost a S-deck.

A new fin had to be made.

To a Safe Set template.

Finished.

GORDON WOODS SURFBOARDS

Triple stringer.

9' 2"x 21 3/8"

This board is in very good condition.

The blue stripe was not original and was removed.

There were a few onions on the deck

and some small dings on the rails.

There is some water staining also on the rails.

Nice rocker.

The deck and bottom have quite a bit of camber.


The fin is CSM with 10oz cloth over.
Base 11 1/2"
Hight 9 1/2"
The fin may have been a D.
Looks like the trailing has been reshaped.


Dings repaired.
Sanded and re glossed and pollished.
At some stage there was a stripe on the deck.
There is no evidence of why it was removed and painted over.

TAYLOR SURFBOARDS

This board is a Taylor. Built in Wow Woy
on the NSW Central coast.
Mr Taylor was a shipwright.
His shed was on the water front
next to the fish markets.

This board has had a previous restoration.
The non original stripes on the deck were removed
to reveal some of the work done.


Original stripes remain intact.
Glossed and polished.

JOE LARKIN SURFBOARDS

9'7" x 21 1/4"

Nose 16"

Tail 13 1/2"

Pod 3"

This old board has seen better days.
The glass on the bottom has been severely attacked by the UV's.
The deck was in slightly better condition.
Numerous delams top and bottom.
Mainly in the sunburnt areas.


Fairly flat rocker with a stage 1 Greenough fin.


The crosses appear original
and were touched up prior to glossing.
This board is past being a rider with the glass the way it is.
But well worth restoring as a wall hanger.

SAM EGAN SURFBOARDS S-DECK

This is a little Sam Egan s deck.

The nose was delamed top and bottom.

The bottom had been painted at some stage.

The paint was removed to reveal a relatively clean bottom.

Rather than inject resin,

the nose was opened up around the rail apex.

Reglassed and glamped back together.

The finished board.

Similar in some respects to the old side slippers.
