SIMON ANDERSON THREE FIN THRUSTER

Every logo on this board was damaged

or had delaminated.

The images don't really show the extent of the damage

this board had endured.

The only reason it was restored is because of what it is.

Those dark patches on the deck were car bog.

They were sanded and dug out to reveal

some pretty nasty, and deep dings.

The dings on the bottom

were filled with a special brew.

More special brew.

The delaminated logos were re bonded.

This board isn't going to be a rider.

All the repairs were sanded fair

and the top and bottom

were laminated with a layer of 4oz.

Filler coated and sanded.

Then glossed and polished.

The above image is the unpolished gloss coat.

I neglected to take shots of the finished board.

LIGHTNING BOLT

I have it on pretty good authority, that some bolts were

built at Bennett's and shaped by Steve O'Donnell.

The deck was in pretty good condition

apart from a dodgy legrope install and a few onions.

Finished.

The rails and the bottom were in poor condition.

Extra glass was added around the rails.

Any lows were then built up and faired.

Freshly glossed bottom.

This board has been kept as original as possible.

So all the dings and stressied are visable.

There is a story in them all.

The only thing the owner wanted to hide

was the ugly post production legrope plug.

Typical early to mid 70's rocker.

And outline with widepoint and thickness foward.

There was allot of damage at both ends.

Pretty wild fin.

Mc COY SINGLE FIN

This is a 5'8" x 19" double flyer single fin

I restored almost 12 months ago. I neglected to it post back then.

Design by Cheyne.

This board was in need of some TLC.

As you can see, the tail has been neglected.

Apart from the tail the rest of the board was in fair condition.

The deck under the back foot had delaminated,

poorly repaired, and delaminated again.

A cardboard template was made to work out

the tail shape at 5'8"

New tail.

Re glossed and polished.

Finished ready to ride again.

This board had something painted all over it.

It didn't take much to sand it off.

But boy it stunk.

CENTRAL COAST SURF DESIGNS

This board is 7'5"

I would say it was built in the early to mid 70's.

I will confirm.

I spoke to Bill on the weekend.

Bill said that the board would have been one of the first

boards built under this label.

Probably 73/74.

The logo is an old AGE surfboards logo.

Some delams were re bonded on the deck.

The two dark areas on the deck are previously re bonded delams.

A cedar tail block was fitted.

The bottom was covered with stressies from nose to tail.

These were sanded back to the glass.

Any dings and lows on the bottom and rails were repaired.

Then the bottom was re glassed with a layer of 6oz.

This was lapped around the rails onto the deck.

The deck, apart from the delams was in pretty fair condition.

BARRY BENNETT PIG

This board has two 5/8" balsa stringers

tapering out from the nose to the tail.
The board had no open dings.

There were a few deep gouges on the bottom nose which

needed some attention. As did the knee dents on the deck.

The fin needed re glassing.

The leading & trailing edges were showing exposed timber.

And how much the fin protrudes out past the pod.

This is a rare example of a Pig board.

Dale surfboards was another manufactuter

based in Brookvale on Sydneys Northern beaches

in the 60's & 70's.

7'6" SOD

Noosa.

Steve O'Donnell

worked at Dale during this period.

Pre restoration.

Nose and tail damage.

With a few dings on the rails.

At some stage a plastic fin was crudely fitted
into the original Safeset finbox.
Making it impossible to use the finbox.

There were a couple of options.
Remove the old box and fit a new/second hand Safeset box.
Or fill the old box and set a new fin on top.
After removing a Safeset box from a donor board.
Which was a major job.
And caused some damage.
Filling the box and setting a new fin was by far the better option.
So the old box was cleaned up.
A 3mm rebate was cut into the box to make a clean edge.
Then filled with pigmented resin and milled fibre.
This was then capped with a two layers of 4oz cloth on the bias.

Foil.
Almost a S-deck.

A new fin had to be made.

To a Safe Set template.

Finished.

This board is in very good condition.

The blue stripe was not original and was removed.

There were a few onions on the deck

and some small dings on the rails.

There is some water staining also on the rails.

Nice rocker.

The deck and bottom have quite a bit of camber.

The fin is CSM with 10oz cloth over.

Hight 9 1/2"
The fin may have been a D.
Looks like the trailing has been reshaped.

Dings repaired.
Sanded and re glossed and pollished.
At some stage there was a stripe on the deck.
There is no evidence of why it was removed and painted over.

TAYLOR SURFBOARDS

Mr Taylor was a shipwright.
His shed was on the water front
next to the fish markets.

This board has had a previous restoration.
The non original stripes on the deck were removed

Glossed and polished.

The glass on the bottom has been severely attacked by the UV's.

The crosses appear original
and were touched up prior to glossing.
This board is past being a rider with the glass the way it is.
But well worth restoring as a wall hanger.

SAM EGAN SURFBOARDS S-DECK

This is a little Sam Egan s deck.

The nose was delamed top and bottom.

The bottom had been painted at some stage.

The paint was removed to reveal a relatively clean bottom.

Rather than inject resin,

the nose was opened up around the rail apex.

Reglassed and glamped back together.

Similar in some respects to the old side slippers.

I guess you could call this board a double ender or an egg. It is 7'5" long. The deck and bottom are cambered. It is stringerless and has a Greenough Stage 3 fin. There is a circular knee patch centred over the logo. Hard to place exactly time wise, but it is obviously from late 66 to 69.

This image shows the repair ready for glassing. Q-cell sanded, any minor lows filled and sanded. Rails ground around onto the deck.

All the other lows and dings have now been repaired. Two coats of pigment will be applied. The first is a thick filler coat. This is sanded and final fairing is done. Any residule lows are touched up and then the second pigment coat is applied. Once cured it is wet and dry sanded and polished.

BARRY BENNETT NAT YOUNG SURF DESIGNS STINGER

This board is a Nat Young Surf Designs Stinger. It was built at Bennett Surfboards in Brookvale NSW Australia. In 1976 Nat started out on his own after shaping his pintails at Bennetts. So this board would have been made prior this period.

PRE RESTORATION

There is no way of telling if Nat shaped this board, or if it was shaped by one of the Bennett team, as the board was in such a state of disrepair.
According to its owner, it had been laying in the mangroves infront of his neighbor’s house for about 7 or 8 years before he decided to retrieve it from its watery fate. So it goes without saying it was in pretty bad shape when I got it.

ORIGINAL BOTTOM

It must have been laying bottom up. Because the bottom was so badly sunken and distorted, that in some areas it need almost 1.5" of foam replaced to bring it up to stringer level. The original fin had been cut off.

GLASS STRIPPED

The deck was in better condition as far as foam condition was concerned. Though it look like someone had got to it with a pickaxe around the tail. A large area of glass was missing in the area under where your back foot would go.

FAIRING BOTTOM

I decided that it would be easier to strip the glass of the deck and bottom. I left the glass on the rails. The bottom was prepped and replacement foam was bonded, reshaped, filled and faired.

READY TO BE SANDED

The deck needed less work. It was given a sand to reveal fresh foam. The deep holes were filled a little low. Then the deck was glassed with a layer of 6oz lapping onto the remaining glass on the rails. The bottom was glassed with a layer of 6oz cloth also lapping onto the remaining glass on the rails. Then all the remaining low areas on the deck were filled and sanded fair. I did this because if I filled the lows on the deck and tried to sand them fair on the foam, the foam surrounding the filled areas would be sanded away. The second deck laminate was added. 4oz cloth this time.

A layer of 4oz with the new rice papers then laminated. Then the deck was filler coated.

The deck logos were barely visible under the yellow and crazed glass. The bottom Barry Bennett diamond shaped logo was completely gone. All that could be seen was the diamond shape.

The logos were removed. The plan was to restore them and rebond them to the board. But this soon changed. I was helping out a good friend who has been in the industry for years. He was working at Bennetts in the 70’s and had shaped some of Nat Young Surf Designs shapes during this period. We were sorting through some of his accumulated clutter and out falls a rice paper exactly the same as the one on the board. I told him that I was restoring this board and he was kind enough to donate it to the project. The NYSD font was sourced online and a new rice paper was made using my home computer and printer.

A new fin had to be made and set. The template was taken from a NYSD Bennett that I own.

FINISHED DECK & BOTTOM

It may not seem it by looking at the board in its pre-restored state, but the original colour is pale blue. This was revealed after removing the deck logos. So the board painted pale blue. The deck being a few shades darker than the bottom, lapping onto the bottom to give the impression of a cut lap. Once cured the board was topcoat cleared, wet and dry sanded and polished.

This Dillon was in well used condition when it came in for work.

It had been painted with some sort of paint. Not pigment coated. This was removed with paint stripper.

Considering its age, the deck was in fair condition. Numerous dings, but no delams or soft spots. Apart from the logo. Which was removed, cleaned up and rebonded to the board.

The bottom was a different story. Large areas of delam on rails and on bottom toward the nose. These areas were rebonded. All the dings repaired.
The board was given a heavy sand. Then the bottom was laminated with one layer of 4 oz cloth. A second layer was added to the rails.

The fin is made from chopped strand matt, rather than cloth. There was a large area of delam under the fin. Holes were drilled either side of the fin. Resin was injected and the holes glassed over. They were hidden under the pigment coat.

SWEET COUNTRY CORN

Sweet Country Corn was a brand built by Bill Cilia (Nirvana Surfboards) while he was working at Shane Surfboards in the 70's. Bill can't remember how many boards he built under this label. But he does remember how he came up with the name. The story goes that Bill was sitting down with Shane one day at the factory and they were discussing what name he could use on these new boards. At the table was a can of Sweet Corn.

This board had a basic restoration. Dings repaired, gloss and polish.

BARRY BENNETT SINGLE FIN DECK

This board was shaped by Russell Head. Late 70's early 80's. Single timber centre stringer with two resin glue up stringers added. As seen in the original photo the deck is in good condition. With only two areas that needed covering. The ding on the left rail and the area where the old legrope plug had been removed.

Unfortunately the bottom was not in the same condition as the deck. Plenty of dings, and a number of stressies needed repairing. Once the dings were sanded, the bottom was sanded and filler coated. The whole board was fine sanded and painted. Red pin lines and lightning bolt added. Clear coated, wet and dry sanded and polished.

There seems to be a fair few of these boards floating around. This one is the third that I have restored. The last two were shaped buy Geoff McCoy. Some body had set fire to the tail of this one. So the area behind the fin was pretty much destroyed. That is the area where Geoff McCoy had initialed and printed the basic dimensions on the other two boards.

The pigment laminate with cut laps has been capped with a layer of 4oz. The new fin was then set on top of the 4 oz. The whole repair was filler coated. All the other dings were repaired, and the board was sanded ready for glossing.

The new fin was made using 10oz Volan glass and general purpose laminating resin. The GP resin was used to achieve the old look. The template is from the original fin.

WM TRACKER RESTORATION 2004

This board is a WM (William Morton) Tracker. It was shaped by Vic Elliott. WM Surfboards was located at 58A Cumberland Road Auburn Lakemba NSW 1967 to 1969. William Morton was glasser and shaper. He was previously employed at Ron Surfboards with Geoff McCoy. They later formed M and M Surfboards, Auburn NSW. The rest is history. The dimensions are 7'8" x 19 3/4" x 3'' The nose is 13" and the tail is 8"@ 12"

The board was in a bad way when I received it. To most people it would be rubbish, after all that is where it was found, on a garbage pile. An eight-inch section of the nose was missing and three inches of the tail was also missing. The original fin box was still in the board but somebody had crudely bonded a fin into the box with resin. The deck had a number of areas that had delaminated and it was covered in dents and dings. The whole board needed to been sanded to prepare for the ding repairs. Once sanded, the nose and tail areas were prepared for the new foam. The old fin box was removed and the resulting hole was filled with foam. The nose and tail were reshaped and everything was glassed. As the board was going to have a full colour job all the dings needed to be glassed to stabilise the dinged areas. Then they could be filled with a 75/25 mix of Q-cell/ Aerosil. The next process was to sand and fair and a layer or 4oz applied over the filled areas. The rails were in such poor condition that after being faired two layers of 4oz was applied to the entire length or both rails. The delaminated areas in the deck were removed and the areas re glassed, filled and faired. The section of glass with the shaper’s logo on it was cleaned up and reglassed into the board. The dents in the deck were filled with a wet mix of chopped glass and resin and two applications were necessary to fill all the dents. I had not tried this before and I will certainly use this method again as it worked well. It does add some weight, but as this board is going to be a wall hanger the added weight is not a major consideration. Normally if there are a small amount of shallow dents to fill I’ll use straight resin. But because of the amount and the size of the dents and the amount of camber in the deck, something with a little more substance was needed. Q-cell / Aerosol was another option but I thought it would be a good opportunity to try the former method on this occasion.

The paint used was thinners based auto acrylic. This was thinned 1:1 and the TCC was thinned at 1.5:1 The gun used is an Oldfield’s 60T electric airless. It is pretty basic, but it did the job. Any orange peel or overspray dry spots easily sanded out.

SHAPERS LOGO

The bottom was painted first. One light coat was applied, left for ten minutes to tack off. Then three wet coats were applied allowing time to tack off between coats. The board was left for a week to cure. Then the deck colours were applied. Same method as above, the white first then the middle. Again the board was left to cure. The board was sanded with 600 wet & dry and masked for the black pinlines. Once sprayed and cured the board was sanded with 1200 wet & dry and glossed. Acrylic Topcoat clear was used. Applied the same way as the colour coats. The fin was sprayed separately one side at a time with the board on its rail in the stands. Again the board was left to cure. Topcoat clear is very easy to get a gloss with. But it is very soft and easily burns when polishing. The board was sanded with 600, 1200 wet & dry then polished with “Farecla” G3 regular grade compound paste. Then finished with “Farecla” super fine polish. Using a lambswool-buffing pad.

A new fin had to be made. This was constructed from 10oz-boat cloth and surfboard-laminating resin was used. The template is from a “Hohensee” tracker that I own. This was glassed onto the board.

This is the first major painted restoration that I had undertaken. I normally do full pigment restorations. There does seem to be a growth in the interest of the boards from the late 60’s into the 70’s and people are asking for painted restorations.

EGAN RESTORATION

This board is a Egan "Custom Model" It was made in Newcastle NSW by Sam Egan. Sam Egan is still shaping today. This board was in very poor condition. The glass on the bottom has been removed. The stringer has fallen out, but is still with the board, as is the original fin.The exposed foam has weathered away somewhat and was about 10mm lower than it was when the board was shaped. The logo on the deck has delaminated, and will be removed and re bonded to the board. Its dimensions are 10' x 22 1/2" x 3 3/4" The nose is 17" @ 12" and the tail is 15 3/8" @ 12" The pod is 6"

Due to exposure to the elements for some years, the foam on the bottom of the board has eroded away. Leaving a 10mm deep void along the length of the board needing to be rebuilt. Two pack expanding polyurethane foam was used to fill the void

LOGO REMOVED

As with most old logos, this one was also delaminated. There was also a ding that needed repairing under the logo. You can see the damage to the logo between the S and the A. After the ding was repaired and the edges around the perimeter of the logo were cleaned up, it was re bonded to the board.

D FIN RON RESTORATION

This is the first of two Ron Surfboards to be restored. Ron Surfboards was a subsidiary company of Crane Industries. A plumbing supply company. Geoff Mc Coy started his career in the surfboard industry there. The blue pigment work is original. It is hiding some large voids in the foam on the bottom. The original fin was a plastic dork fin. This was beyond repair and was replaced. The area under the fin was badly water damaged and had to be re built. There had been an attempted restoration a some point. It was decided not to re do the pigment work as the covered foam was quiet white and the reversing effect looked good.
